Tips for Caring for your Holiday Attire

Can you believe it? Holidays are just around the corner. It seems like yesterday that we were out enjoying the warmth of summer and now the holiday season is only a few weeks away. This means endless parties and entertaining and all the excitement that the season brings with it.

To get the most out of your Holidays season, we at West Boulevard Cleaners would like to offer you the following tips on how to keep your holiday attire jolly and looking new.

Be Prepared

Chances are you haven’t even looked at or thought about your regular holiday attire since last year’s festivities. It would probably be a good idea to get those clothes out of storage and see how they look and even more importantly, how they fit. You may need to run an iron over them or give them a quick wash to get them ready for the upcoming holidays.

Keep it Stain Free

In between family and friends, work, church and clubs you might be part of, chances are that you will attend many different holiday parties over the next month. Which makes it even more important to keep your party clothes stain free. The last thing you want to be dealing with is to be out shopping for a new dress because a stain ruined the last one.

The holidays are meant to be enjoyed, not to add a new level of stress to your life by tracking down replacement clothes at the last minute.

Leave it to the Experts

If you are feeling overwhelmed or just do not want to risk the chance of the stain setting and ruining that garment, bring your holiday attire to us. We are an eco-friendly dry cleaner that specialize in stain removal and can offer you a wide range of dry cleaning services. We would love to be a part of your stain free exciting holiday season.

Use Santa’s Little Helpers

We also know how busy the holiday season is and how a simple stain can shift the entire focus of your day. Because everyone is short of time around the holidays we offer a free pick-up and delivery service. Let us take care of all of the details, so you can focus more on the festivities and less on that red wine stain that you got at last night’s Christmas party.

Happy Holidays from West Boulevard Cleaners!

Dealing with Back to School Stains

Now that the mad rush of September is over and all the back to school shopping has been done, you may be noticing that some of those newly purchased school clothes are starting to come home with stains.  Unfortunately, kids will be kids, but as a parent, you want the most life out of these school clothes as possible and preferably a stain free life.

As the premier eco-friendly dry cleaners in Vancouver, we would like to offer you the following advice on how to keep your children’s school clothes stain free and looking like new for the entire school year.

Know the Schedule

Ask your child about their school schedule so that you can send them with the appropriate dress.  For instance, if it is an art class day, consider purchasing an apron or smock so that they can paint worry and stain free.  Make sure to send your child with appropriate gym clothes with the understanding that grass stains and other gym related wear and tear are going to be the norm.

Read Those Labels

Every garment in your child’s wardrobe comes with a care tag attached to it.  Make sure to read the label and understand what it means.  If a certain shirt needs to be washed in hot water, do not wash it in cold water.

Here’s the deal:

Incorrect label reading can not only ruin or shrink certain clothing, it can also set stains, making them a permanent fixture on your child’s favourite shirt.

Bring it to a professional

Sometimes the stain is just too big or the garment is just too precious to attempt a home remedy stain removal.  If this is the case, bring that stain to us. We offer professional grade dry cleaning and our friendly staff can remove even the most stubborn stains.

We know how busy this time of year is so we offer a free pick-up and delivery service to free up some of your precious time for those after school soccer practices or dance recitals.

Let us help you keep your child’s school clothes stain free and looking like new for the remainder of the school year.  We look forward to working with you today.

Dry Clean your Patio Carpets and Spice up your Indoors for Fall!

The start of the school year is always the first sign that summer is coming to an end.  Hopefully, we can get a few more good weeks of warm weather, but inevitably, the fall rains are just around the corner.

For many of us that means that it is time to take down the deck furniture, put away the kiddie pool and think about what you want to do with those outdoor carpets and blankets.

It’s a great idea to clean those carpets before you put them away for the fall and winter, so feel free to bring them to us and let us clean them with our eco-friendly dry-cleaning services.

Can I use that Outdoor Rug Indoors?

The answer is yes!  Today’s outdoor rugs are not those unsightly rugs of years past.  Rather, many of these rugs are attractive and come in a wide range of colours and patterns.  Once you have removed all the dirt and stains in your outdoor carpets, you can think about a place where they can be used inside your home.

I would like to suggest the following areas where that outdoor rug will find a new use:

  • Kitchen – A well placed rug in the kitchen may help add to the décor and give a change of scenery.
  • High traffic hallway – Most of today’s outdoor carpets are extremely durable and may save the carpet from the unneeded wear and tear of three seasons. If you have children it may also save your carpet from unnecessary stains.
  • Mudroom – Why not store dirty and wet shoes on your outdoor carpet and get double duty out of it rather than stain and ruin another carpet?
  • Entrance way – What better place for an outdoor carpet. You can continue to wipe your dirty feet on this carpet throughout the year.  With the right pattern or colours, it may brighten up this often-overlooked part of your home.

Here’s the deal:

With a little bit of imagination, you can quickly find innovative ways to use that outdoor carpet.

Outdoor Blankets

Those outdoor blankets that were keeping you warm as you gazed at the summer stars can also be quickly moved from outdoors to indoors.  Once you have brought your outdoor blankets to us for a thorough eco-friendly cleaning, it is time to find them a new home.

I would recommend that you put those warm, hardy blankets to beneficial use.  Outdoor blankets are a terrific addition to any room over the winter months and can be used as a throw on your bed when you’re looking for that extra layer of warmth.

Your outdoor blanket can also be used as a throw on your couch or favourite chair to keep that winter chill away.  Regardless of your choice, instead of purchasing new blankets for those cold months, why not save a few dollars and reuse your outdoor blankets inside.  You already own them anyway – this way you will save a shopping trip and some storage space.

I understand how busy many of our schedules are, especially in this transitionary time of year.  If you like the idea of bringing your outdoor coverings inside, but just don’t have the time to get your blankets and carpets dropped off, we run a free pick-up and delivery service.

Let us help you get those outdoor carpets and blankets clean so that they can keep you warm and dirt free for the fall and winter.  I look forward to seeing you soon.

Stay Safe with Eco Friendly Dry Cleaning

Everyone has a few articles of clothing in their wardrobe that are either in desperate need of a dry cleaning or are regularly dry cleaned. Either way, everyone should use a dry cleaner. There are many reasons as to why dry cleaning is important. Probably the most important reason however, is that dry cleaning will get some of the stains out of your clothes that a regular washing cycle cannot and it will keep your clothes looking and feeling like new. Here are a few of the factors you may want to consider when choosing a dry cleaners that is right for you.

Go Green
Lately, the dry cleaning industry has come under a lot of fire. This is due to the fact that traditional dry cleaning methods are dangerous to not only the environment, but also to you. The reason that the traditional dry cleaning method is so dangerous is because of the chemicals that are used. That chemical is known as tetrachloroethylene or PERC for short.

This chemical has been linked to many different health concerns and has been said to be carcinogenic or having the ability to cause cancer with long term exposure. PERC damages the environment and greatly affects the air quality. PERC is used in the traditional dry cleaning process and is in the fibers of your clothes if they have been dry cleaned. With long term exposure, PERC can affect the nervous system, brain activity and development and in extreme cases can be carcinogenic.

With that being said, there are many great alternatives to the traditional dry cleaning approach. When choosing a dry cleaners, you may want to consider one that uses eco-friendly green ways of laundering your clothes. These eco-friendly ways will not pollute the environment, nor will they harm you like traditional dry cleaning methods that use PERC.

There are many different dry cleaners who are competing for your business. When choosing a dry cleaners that will suit your needs, consider seeing what services each offers and base your decision on these services. For instance, do they offer any other services other than dry cleaning? Extra services may involve on-site alterations or free pick-up and delivery. Extra convenient services as well as competitive and friendly customer service are great reasons to stay with a dry cleaners.

At West Boulevard cleaners we offer both on-site alterations and a free pick-up and delivery service. As the premier eco-friendly dry cleaners in Vancouver we believe in using environmentally friendly methods to get your clothes clean and keeping them looking and feeling like new. We offer professional and friendly customer service as well as competitive prices on all of our services. We are a local, family-run business and are proud to call Vancouver home. We look forward to becoming your neighborhood dry cleaners.

How to Remove Summer Cookout Stains

It’s summertime and that means it’s time to get outside and enjoy the weather of the season. Whether it’s for Father’s Day, Canada Day, British Columbia Day or any of the many other holidays that are celebrated this time of the year, people throughout the country are ready to break out the grill and plan a cookout with family and friends.

However, with outdoor cookouts comes a variety of stains from food items. While stubborn food stains may seem impossible to get out, using a few of these tricks can make your clothes like-new. Before heading to your local Kitsilano dry cleaners, read below for sample stains and what remedies work to remove them.

One of the most common stains is ketchup. Whether it’s on a hot dog or hamburger, this delicious condiment has the ability to land anywhere. If you’re ready to remove this extra colour from your outfit, it can be done using a spoon, dish detergent, or either lemon juice, white vinegar or hydrogen peroxide.

  • Remove unwanted ketchup with a spoon (napkins bury stains deeper in fabric)
  • Let cold water run from the back of the stain
  • Add a few drops of your dish soap on the stain and rub into the fabric
  • Rinse

If dish soap doesn’t work, swap it out for the other listed options, and repeat until the stain is gone.

This yellow condiment has a variety of uses from putting mustard on pretzels to burgers — but on a nice shirt or blouse shouldn’t be one of them. Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be a problem, though you may need to repeat multiple times before seeing the mustard stain completely disappear. Using a spoon, dish detergent, and glycerin:

  • Collect as much of the stain as possible with a spoon
  • Run cold water from behind the location of the stain
  • Add glycerin to the stain (vinegar or detergent can also be used)
  • Let stand for a few minutes, and rub fabric if stain persists

As a hot dog topping, relish is great, but it’s green and yellow colours can be a nightmare for your clothes. Removing it is easy, however, and it only takes a spoon and baking soda:

  • Scoop up relish stains with spoon
  • Run cold water from behind location of the stain
  • Combine one teaspoon baking soda and 2 teaspoons water to make a paste
  • Rub paste onto stain and let set for a few minutes
  • Rinse and repeat as needed

Mayonnaise is a versatile part of summer cooking, from a food topping to an ingredient in potato salad, egg salad and more. So what do you do when a dollop lands on your outfit? With the help of a spoon, dish soap and spot remover, it’s easy to erase the stain:

  • Gather unwanted mayo with spoon
  • Soak the stain with the spot remover or bleach alternative
  • Add dish soap to stain and rub into fabric
  • Rinse
  • Place the fabric into your washing machine and wash in the hottest water that’s safe for the fabric

Salsa is quickly becoming a popular snack to bring to parties, however it can be messy to eat. The good news is that removing it is relatively easy, with the help of a spoon, dish detergent, with either lemon juice, white vinegar or hydrogen peroxide:

  • Collect excess salsa with a spoon
  • Drain back of fabric with cold water
  • Add dish detergent and let set for a few minutes, then rub fabric and rinse
  • Use other listed ingredients if soap is ineffective, and repeat until stain is gone
