Fall Fashion Trends – Part 2

With so many different fashion trends available for fall, it was impossible to fit them all into one blog.  As your premier Kitsilano solvent free dry cleaning alternative, here is the second installment of this year’s hottest fall fashion trends.  Pick your favourites and be sure to step into Vancouver’s most picturesque season in style.

Spots

Get your spots on this fall.  Look for your favourite coat, blazer or even skirt in leopard print.  Faux fur spotted coats are a great way to keep warm and fashionable.

Lace

Another bold fashion statement this fall is lace. Look for lace tops, dresses and skirts in a variety of cuts and patterns.  For the ultimate ladylike outfit, try pairing your favourite lace top with a matching lace skirt.

Millennial Purple

If 2018 was all about millennial pink, then the colour for fall 2019 is millennial purple.  There is a large range of different shades to choose from so choose your favourite and be sure to have at least a few pieces with an orchard purple hue in your wardrobe.

Feathers

This fall, feathers are popping up everywhere and on everything.  From coats to the cuffs of jeans, give your fall wardrobe a lighter look with your favourite feathery fashion statement.

Belts

It seems that this year’s suit selections have been built around a cinched waist to show off the belt.  Even if you don’t want to invest in a suit or jacket, you can still show off your favourite belt.  Some of the belt designs that are sure to be seen this fall include:

  • Large or oversized leather belts with a bold patterned buckle.
  • Thin, sleek black leather or faux belts with metallic buckles.
  • Grommet belts of all different shapes and sizes.

Regardless of what type of belt you choose, be sure to show it off and complete any type of fall fashion trend.

Hats

With the amount of cold, wet weather we are sure to have this fall, no fall fashion is complete without a hat to keep the rain off.  It seems toques are not the choice this year, but instead, many designers are getting creative and perhaps even a little wacky.  Make quite the statement with a bucket hat or tone it down and go with the always trendy newsboy or brimmed fedora.  Whatever your choice is the main thing is to stay warm and dry this fall.

This extensive list of fall trends offer a variety of different fashion choices, colours and accessories.  Mix and match your favourites and get out and enjoy the season.  If you have any questions about how to properly care for your garments or are interested in the many services that we offer, please call or stop by today.  We look forward to seeing you soon.

How Often Should I Dry Clean my Clothes?

How often should I dry clean my clothes?  I am asked this question often and the answer really depends on a wide range of factors and what type of garments you are cleaning.  As your premier Kitsilano solvent free dry cleaners, here is a detailed answer to how often you should dry clean your clothes and the benefits of dry cleaning over conventional washing.

What is Dry Cleaning?

Traditional dry cleaning uses a chemical (PERC) to remove stains and clean your clothes.  At West Boulevard Cleaners, we get the same results of a traditional dry cleaner, but without the use of this harmful and dangerous chemical solvent. Instead, we use an environmentally friendly cleaning technique that is sure to keep your clothes spot free and looking like new for years to come.  Your clothes will be clean, solvent free, pressed and ready to go for your next big job interview or executive meeting.

Different Garments, Different Cleaning Cycles

Different garments need to be cleaned at different times.  As a rule of thumb, you should be able to get three wears out of a garment before it needs to be cleaned again.  Here is a detailed list of some of the garment and material types and our recommended dry-cleaning cycle.

  • Shirts – Wool shirts should be dry cleaned after every 3 or 4 wears. Cotton shirts should be washed after 3 wears unless you want them pressed – then after 2 wears at a maximum.
  • Suit coats – Typically suit coats are worn multiple times (5-7) before they need another clean.
  • Pants – Wool pants can be worn up to 20 times before they need to be dry cleaned again. If they are used heavily or are stained, then get them cleaned immediately.
  • Denim – Depending upon the amount of use, you should be able to get 10-15 wears out of your favourite jeans or even longer for a jacket. The benefit of dry cleaning your denim is that it will not shrink or show signs of wear and the garment is pressed.

Keep in mind that these are just general guidelines for how often you should dry clean your clothes.  Other factors such as how often you wear them and if they become dirty or stained will really affect how often you are dry cleaning your garments.

If you have any questions about our eco-friendly cleaning services or would like to talk to our friendly and professional staff about how often you should be cleaning your clothes, please call or stop by today.  We look forward to seeing you soon and helping you keep your clothes looking like new for years to come.

Why Solvent Free Cleaning is the Right Choice for You

It really is no secret that traditional dry-cleaning methods have been in the spotlight for some time now.  The chemicals used in the process are not only harmful to the environment, they are also harmful to you and your family.  As the premier Kitsilano solvent free drycleaners, we are proud to offer a safe alternative.  Here is an overview of why choosing solvent free is the right choice for you.

Traditional Dry Cleaning

The traditional dry-cleaning process has always relied upon harsh chemicals to get your clothes clean.  The main culprit is perchloroethylene or PERC.  PERC has been linked to a wide range of health conditions and is a suspected carcinogen.  Some of the more alarming health concerns of PERC include:

  • Short term effects – shortness of breath, dizziness and headaches, according to the EPA.
  • Long term exposure can lead to different types of cancers and kidney damage.

Your garments are soaked in a chemical bath of PERC and then dried.  Not all the PERC residue is removed and depending upon the type of fibers in your clothing (cotton, Polyester, wool), your clothing retains a certain amount of this harmful chemical.  Your clothes are then zipped into bags which helps to contain the chemical that is then slowly released into the air and into your skin when you wear that piece of clothing.

Here’s the Deal:

The hydrocarbons in PERC break down very slowly in the air, so the chemical effects can travel long distances and can linger in your home and in your clothes for a long period of time, making it dangerous to you and your family members.

No one wants to be exposed to harmful chemicals or have to deal with health problems later in their life.  Almost every industry is moving towards a greener future and making the switch to a solvent free cleaning approach for your clothes.  Stop by today to see why our solvent free cleaning method is the right choice for you and your clothes.  Our friendly and professional staff would love to answer any questions that you may have.  We look forward to seeing you soon.

A Parent Guide for Surviving ‘Back to School’

After another epic Vancouver summer, it is time to switch gears and get back on schedule.  That’s right, it’s time to head back to school.  It is debatable on whether the school schedule is more difficult for kids or parents.  As your premier Kitsilano solvent free dry cleaners, we would like to offer this guide to parents to best manage the back to school grind.

Start Early

Check your calendar and see how many days you have left before the first day of school.  About mid-August you may want to think about establishing a schedule for the family.  Your family’s back to school schedule should include the following:

  • Start the bedtime and wake up schedule a few weeks before the first day, so everyone is fresh and ready to go on day one.
  • Reconfirm all after school activities and before and after school care and write them into your day planner.
  • If your kids are starting in a new school or will be taking public transit, walk/bus the route so they are familiar with it on the first day.
  • Get your back to school shopping done early, so you are not feeling stressed or short on time.
  • Post a family calendar on the fridge so that all members of your family have a visual of the activities, appointments and other deadlines of the week and month.

Lay the Groundwork

It is best to establish the new school year’s expectations and rules before the first day.  By laying the groundwork early, your kids will understand what the rules are.  This should prevent any type of power struggle or leave you open to ongoing negotiations.  Some rules or expectations that you may want to review or establish include:

  • The amount of screen time on school days and weekends.
  • School day and weekend bedtimes.
  • When and where homework will be done in the house.
  • How many and what type of activities they can chose from during the school year.

Take Advantage of Services

Once you have laid the groundwork and established a school routine and schedule, you are probably going to feel pressed for time.  Time management and organization are both keys to any successful school schedule.  When managing your time, look to take advantage of free services that are offered by companies.  At West Boulevard Cleaners, we understand time constraints, so we offer a free pick-up and delivery service.

Here’s the Deal:

Let us take care of your back to school cleaning needs and pick them up and drop them off right at your front door.  This way you will have more time to get your kids to soccer practice, piano lessons or whatever activities you are involved in.

These guidelines should help any parent get ready for that first day of school.  If you would like any other tips on how to prepare for back to school or would like to take advantage of our free pick up and delivery service, please contact us today.  We are proud to offer a wide range of solvent free cleaning services and look forward to seeing you soon.

Must Have Fashion Trends This Summer – Part 2

With the many fashion statements available for summer 2019, one blog just wasn’t enough to cover them all.  As your premier Kitsilano solvent free dry cleaners, here is the second instalment of 2019’s fashion trends that are sure to be seen in all the Vancouver hotspots this summer.

Tie-Dye

The 70’s are back in full effect.  Tie-Dye is making a big comeback and is featured on everything from shirts and shorts to long summer dresses and even on your favourite pair of Converse high tops.  Be sure to get in touch with your inner hippie and strut your stuff in the latest tie-dye fashions.

Blazers and Suits

Boiler suits originally designed as protective gear for manual labour are one of the hottest summer fashion trends of the year.  Pick your favourite summer colour and style and get out there and rock this utilitarian fashion trend.

Fringe and Patchwork

Does fringe ever really go out of style?  Well so far, the answer is no.  Fringe has been worked into almost all modern wear, so that you can show off the classic western detail in your favourite summer outfit.

Patchwork is no longer just a craft for your Grandma, it is also one of this summer’s hottest fashion trends.  As colourful as it is creative, patchwork consists of sewn pieces of material woven together to achieve an eclectic and eye-catching summer design.  Look for it on suits, pants, jackets and other summer favourites.  Be sure to be the focus of your next summer event by pairing a patchwork garment with other simple block coloured pieces and the latest summer accessories.

Hats

With all the forecasted sunshine and hot weather you can expect this summer, a fashionable hat is a must to keep you cool.  Bucket hats are sure to be the hottest (or coolest) 2019 trend of the summer.  Choose your favourite pattern or colour and be sure to wear this iconic fashion trend to look stylish around town.

Trucker Hats or just a plain baseball hat never seems to go out of style.  Choose your favourite team, fashion designer or colour and beat the heat this summer while looking good.

Accessories

Although not functional nor practical, the shrunken bag is the must have accessory of the summer.  This bag has just enough room to hold your lipstick and phone (if you are lucky) and is the true miniature of your favourite handbag.  So, if you choose style over function, then the shrunken bag is for you.  On a positive note, your shoulder won’t get sore from carrying it around all day.

Be seen this summer in all your favourite fashionable garments in and around Vancouver.  With so many trends to choose from, there is something for everyone in 2019.  Be sure to bring your summer garments to West Boulevard Cleaners for any alterations or cleaning.  Our eco-friendly dry-cleaning services will have your clothes looking new without leaving them coated in harmful chemicals.  Our knowledgeable and friendly staff are ready to assist you in any way necessary, so that you can get out and enjoy Vancouver’s summer.  We hope to see you soon.
