New Year’s Resolutions for a Greener Planet

It should come as no surprise that the Time person of the year is Greta Thunberg.  She is the new face of a green movement that is sure to change the planet for the better.  As we welcome 2020, why not be a part of this new positive movement and make some of your New year’s resolutions green ones?

As your Kitsilano dry cleaning alternative, we would like to suggest the following New year’s resolutions for a greener planet.

BYOB

A very simple resolution that you can make and eventually will probably have to accept in the upcoming year in Vancouver is bringing your own cloth shopping bags.  Don’t be part of the problem, be part of the solution.  Plastic shopping bags are unnecessary and can be easily replaced.  This small change can have a huge impact on our planet and many cities have already banned the bag.  Get on board and make the switch this year.

Boycott Fast Fashion

Fast fashion is quickly filling up our landfills and using unnecessary resources.  Think twice before buying that next inexpensive garment and try to consider alternatives.  Alternative clothing choices include:

  • Buying used and giving that clothing piece another life.
  • Choosing locally made clothing.
  • Choosing organic cotton or ethically made clothing options.

Here’s the Deal:

You, as the consumer, have the ultimate say in how the economy works.  If everyone starts to make better, ethical and environmental choices, the huge corporations will have no choice but to change their product line.

BYOB II

Another simple way to make a huge environmental difference is to bring your own water bottle everywhere you go.  There is no need to buy bottled water in Vancouver.  We are blessed to have some of the best drinking water on earth and chances are, it is far healthier and less polluted than the water that is in the disposable bottles that you purchase.  Make the switch this year from disposable plastic that is ruining our oceans to a far more ethical and educated way of drinking your water – BYOB.

Cut the Chemicals

Removing chemicals from your life, your body and the items that you use can only be a good thing.  We are already exposed to so many pollutants in the modern world that is having adverse effects on our health and well-being.  This year make the switch and reduce the amount of chemicals that you are exposed to.  Look at your home cleaning products and switch them out to more natural and environmentally friendly products.

At West Boulevard Cleaners we know the dangers of chemicals and offer an eco-friendly cleaning alternative that cleans your clothes without the use of harsh chemicals.  Why put chemicals next to your body if you don’t need to?  This year make the choice to go chemical free – your health and the planet will thank you.

These simple New year’s resolutions will not only make the planet a greener place, they will also add value and health to your life.  If you would like more information on any of these resolutions or are interested in the services that we offer, please contact us today.  We look forward to hearing from you soon.

Happy New Years from West Boulevard Cleaners.

How Often Should I Dry Clean my Clothes?

How often should I dry clean my clothes?  I am asked this question often and the answer really depends on a wide range of factors and what type of garments you are cleaning.  As your premier Kitsilano solvent free dry cleaners, here is a detailed answer to how often you should dry clean your clothes and the benefits of dry cleaning over conventional washing.

What is Dry Cleaning?

Traditional dry cleaning uses a chemical (PERC) to remove stains and clean your clothes.  At West Boulevard Cleaners, we get the same results of a traditional dry cleaner, but without the use of this harmful and dangerous chemical solvent. Instead, we use an environmentally friendly cleaning technique that is sure to keep your clothes spot free and looking like new for years to come.  Your clothes will be clean, solvent free, pressed and ready to go for your next big job interview or executive meeting.

Different Garments, Different Cleaning Cycles

Different garments need to be cleaned at different times.  As a rule of thumb, you should be able to get three wears out of a garment before it needs to be cleaned again.  Here is a detailed list of some of the garment and material types and our recommended dry-cleaning cycle.

  • Shirts – Wool shirts should be dry cleaned after every 3 or 4 wears. Cotton shirts should be washed after 3 wears unless you want them pressed – then after 2 wears at a maximum.
  • Suit coats – Typically suit coats are worn multiple times (5-7) before they need another clean.
  • Pants – Wool pants can be worn up to 20 times before they need to be dry cleaned again. If they are used heavily or are stained, then get them cleaned immediately.
  • Denim – Depending upon the amount of use, you should be able to get 10-15 wears out of your favourite jeans or even longer for a jacket. The benefit of dry cleaning your denim is that it will not shrink or show signs of wear and the garment is pressed.

Keep in mind that these are just general guidelines for how often you should dry clean your clothes.  Other factors such as how often you wear them and if they become dirty or stained will really affect how often you are dry cleaning your garments.

If you have any questions about our eco-friendly cleaning services or would like to talk to our friendly and professional staff about how often you should be cleaning your clothes, please call or stop by today.  We look forward to seeing you soon and helping you keep your clothes looking like new for years to come.

A Parent Guide for Surviving ‘Back to School’

After another epic Vancouver summer, it is time to switch gears and get back on schedule.  That’s right, it’s time to head back to school.  It is debatable on whether the school schedule is more difficult for kids or parents.  As your premier Kitsilano solvent free dry cleaners, we would like to offer this guide to parents to best manage the back to school grind.

Start Early

Check your calendar and see how many days you have left before the first day of school.  About mid-August you may want to think about establishing a schedule for the family.  Your family’s back to school schedule should include the following:

  • Start the bedtime and wake up schedule a few weeks before the first day, so everyone is fresh and ready to go on day one.
  • Reconfirm all after school activities and before and after school care and write them into your day planner.
  • If your kids are starting in a new school or will be taking public transit, walk/bus the route so they are familiar with it on the first day.
  • Get your back to school shopping done early, so you are not feeling stressed or short on time.
  • Post a family calendar on the fridge so that all members of your family have a visual of the activities, appointments and other deadlines of the week and month.

Lay the Groundwork

It is best to establish the new school year’s expectations and rules before the first day.  By laying the groundwork early, your kids will understand what the rules are.  This should prevent any type of power struggle or leave you open to ongoing negotiations.  Some rules or expectations that you may want to review or establish include:

  • The amount of screen time on school days and weekends.
  • School day and weekend bedtimes.
  • When and where homework will be done in the house.
  • How many and what type of activities they can chose from during the school year.

Take Advantage of Services

Once you have laid the groundwork and established a school routine and schedule, you are probably going to feel pressed for time.  Time management and organization are both keys to any successful school schedule.  When managing your time, look to take advantage of free services that are offered by companies.  At West Boulevard Cleaners, we understand time constraints, so we offer a free pick-up and delivery service.

Here’s the Deal:

Let us take care of your back to school cleaning needs and pick them up and drop them off right at your front door.  This way you will have more time to get your kids to soccer practice, piano lessons or whatever activities you are involved in.

These guidelines should help any parent get ready for that first day of school.  If you would like any other tips on how to prepare for back to school or would like to take advantage of our free pick up and delivery service, please contact us today.  We are proud to offer a wide range of solvent free cleaning services and look forward to seeing you soon.
